David Leigh is the Sir Samuel Hall Chair of Chemistry and a Royal Society Research Professor at the University of Manchester. His research focuses on the design, synthesis and operation of artificial molecular machines. His has developed many of the concepts and mechanisms that underpin modern synthetic molecular machinery, including molecular Brownian ratchets, information ratchets and autonomous chemically fuelled molecular motors and pumps. A major theme of his current research is understanding how catalysis and kinetic asymmetry can be used to transduce chemical energy into directional motion, force and work at the molecular scale. He was elected a Fellow of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ in 2009 and is President-elect of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ of Chemistry (President 2028-30).
